Chicago non-profit backs House bill aiming to fund housing for homeless with chronic illness

Johnny Pitts has been receiving help from the AIDS Foundation of Chicago (AFC) for about five years, saying the organization is what helped get him back on his feet."Before I got into AFC, I was hopeless, had no where to stay [and] was going from house-to-house," Pitts said. "It’s hard to be out here by yourself [and] having somewhere to stay [that] gives you better peace of mind."The AFC has been in operation for more than three decades and helps those battling homelessness while living with HIV and other chronic illnesses."There is a great need for housing in Chicagoland for people living with HIV," said Brandi Calvert, Vice President of the AFC.What Calvert also said is that the need for housing is much greater than the current funding available."In the time the AFC has maintained a housing list, it was like one or two, maybe ten people about three or four years ago," Calvert said. Man shot and killed outside Chicago violence reduction non-profit

CHICAGO — A man who was working with a violence reduction non-profit in Chicago was shot and killed Wednesday afternoon in the organization's parking lot.According to Chicago police, the man, 28, was walking around 12:15 p.m. in the 1000 block of East 95th Street when he was approached by two people who fired shots. He was shot in the head and died on the scene. One seriously injured after rollover in southeast Travis County

TRAVIS COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) -- One person was seriously injured after a single-vehicle rollover in southeast Travis County Wednesday, Austin-Travis County EMS said on Twitter.Shortly after 8:30 p.m., ATCEMS medics, the Austin Fire Department and Travis County Fire Rescue responded to the rollover at S. US 183 Highway and East William Cannon Drive, medics said.One adult patient was involved, and medics gave CPR to the patient before transporting them to St. David's South Austin Medical Center with serious injuries, medics said.Drivers should expect traffic delays in the area.The incident remained under investigation Wednesday.

APD searching for suspects in deadly southeast Austin robbery

AUSTIN (KXAN) -- The Austin Police Department is seeking the public's help identifying suspects wanted in a deadly southeast Austin robbery that occurred earlier this week, according to a APD news release.At approximately 2:49 p.m. Monday, officers received a report regarding a shooting in the 7700 block of Springfield Drive, the release said. The caller told police there was a man shot inside a vehicle.On-scene officers found the driver of the vehicle, Brian Serrano, 19, with apparent gunshot wounds, police said. Serrano died on the scene.A woman, who was not identified by police Wednesday and was a passenger inside the vehicle, had non-serious injuries from debris during the shooting, the release said.According to police, investigators believe this started as a robbery committed by several suspects unknown to Serrano and the woman and then escalated to murder.
